Darmian, Land of Historical Castles
     

Dramian Province is located in the east of Southern Khorasan State, and limited to Qaen Province from north, Sarbishehh Province from south, Birjand Province from west, and Afghanistan from east. With an area of 5861km2, the province is composed of three divisions and six villages. Center of the province is Asadieh City located 100km east of Birjand and at 32°54'49"N 60°01'45"E.

Historical Background
Tabas-Mesina and its surrounding areas located 30km east of Asadiaeh City are very rich both historically and archeologically. The great number of mountainous areas existing there had led Ismailia sect to the area and consequently the high and strong castles which they made to defend themselves have remained in most the areas of the province and other cities of Southern Khorasan. Later, the residents of the province were again deprived of sufficient peace and attacked by Mongols and Turkmens and Afghans.

Sultan Ibrahim Reza's Tomb

The construction of Sultan Ibrahim Reza Tomb is attributed to Timurid period and Sultan Hossein Baisonqir. Plan of the structure is in form of foursquare and the interior space where the grave is located is in square shape. The courtyard has high walls on top of which a great dome is constructed. The entrance of the tomb includes a fore-arch and forecourt; the fore-arch is ornamented by beautiful plasterworks in form of knot and network and cells. Among the materials used in the structure; brick, plaster and lime can be implied.

Dorokhsh Mosque

Based on the existing cornice, basic foundation of the mosque is related to 981 Hijri and the founder of the mosque is Amidolmalek Muhammad Dorohkshi. In general, the spaces constructed in the mosque include the main loggia, shabestan, and a wide room adjacent shabestan. Altar is one of the main elements existing in shabestan. Plan of the mosque is designed based on satisfying the timely needs and does not comply with any particular pattern. The most significant ornamental elements used in this historical monument are: ceiling of the altar and cruciform plasterworks on top of the ceiling, arcture on top of the altar with short niches and muqarnas ornaments at the corners, arcatures existing in other parts of shabestan. Also, symmetry existing in the architectural components and elements used in shabestan adds to the beauty of the structure. The wide room existing in east of shabestan is covered using a thick pier and arch and rib method. And, here, small and big niches are seen on the wall. Materials such as rock, brick, adobe and plaster are used in constructing the structure. Based on law, any manipulation of the mosque and its privacy is banned unless by receiving written permission from Cultural Heritage Headquarters

Hendvalan Grand Mosque

The mosque is the most splendid historical, religious structure of Darmian Province. Its main architectural elements are portal, apron, vault, pier shabestan, and altar. Central vault is skillfully located in a foursquare space using squinch. Pier shabestan is located at both sides of the vault and executed using arch and rib technique by four-split method. The structure has various brick ornamentations and the ornaments include: squinches, altars rasmibandi, the estate of domes bricking. This historical monument is constructed in the period of Timurid Shahrokh about 805 (hijri).

Foorg Castle
National Registration No. 3450, Age: Afsharid-Qajar Dynasty, Monument Address: Foorg Village, Asadieh

It is located in Foorg Village, of dependencies of Darmian Province and 90km east of Birjand and 10km Asadieh City. Construction of the castle was begun at the time of Mirza Baqa Khan – ruler of the area. After him, his son – Mirza Rafi' Khan – finished the construction of the castle. Materials used in the construction of the structure are rock, brick, adobe, plaster, lime and cement. Inner space of the castle is composed of various parts including living place of crew, stable, ammunition storeroom and etc which is surrounded by walls of the castle and circular towers, and outlets are built in them for watching and defending. The main gate is located at the east side and a smaller gate at the north side. Dais is located in the highest point and embraces spaces like stable, reservoir, and constructed rooms in two floors and mosque.

Dorokhsh Castle
National Registration No. 15284, Age: Safavid Dynasty, Monument Address: Derakhsh Village

The castle is constructed by a foursquare plane and the main entrance is located at the south side of it. The structure has six circular towers located at the south, west and north sides. Entrance is located at the south side and a porch is located after that which is covered by a skullcap dome. Of the other existing spaces at this side, the connecting corridor, several rooms and firewood room can be implied. The castle has two connected yards. By a corridor, the porch space is ended into the first yard around which the main spaces of the castle are formed including two three-door rooms located at east and west sides. Among the ornamentations existing in the rooms, fireplace, and arcature can be implied. Around the first yard, arcature with gable and crescent arch are seen. Skullcap, flat, and kelil domes are used for covering the spaces. The structure has had both defensive and residential aspects and been the residence of the rulers of the area. There is a room at the northwest corner of the second yard ending into the space of the tower. Based on law, any manipulation of the mosque and its privacy is banned unless by receiving written permission from Cultural Heritage Headquarters.

Tabas Masina Castle
National Registration No. 8280, Age: Islamic, Monument Address: East Tabas Mesina

The castle is located at the east edge of TabasmasinaCity. The plan of the castle is in shape of a circle with several walls and towers. The castle is surrounded by a trench and a large tower is remained at the entrance which now has 11m high and over 15m diameter. Despite the damages and harms happened to the castle, still 15 towers out of total number of towers can be seen. Regarding the circular plan of the castle, it is likely that the monument is related to pre-Islamic period which has been exploited in Islamic period, as well. The existence of ancient hills belonging to historical periods (probably Ashkani) at the edge of the city reinforces the probability that Tabasmasina belongs to pre-Islamic periods. Tabasmasina is a very old and historical city named in many geographical texts if early Islamic centuries. Materials used in the structure are adobe and mud.

Tabas Mesina Windmills

The complex is located in Tabasmesina City, of dependencies of Darmian Province. Natural difficult conditions of desert areas and edge of Iran desert have led the people of desert edge to use their innovation and creativities and control them by making the best use of the natural factors and conditions. Windmills are among the creativities seen in most areas of Southern Khorasan (especially the areas exposed to 120-day winds of Sistan. In defining the windmills, it can be said that the windmill is an architectural structure turning wheat into flour using wind energy. Windmills of Tabasmesina are constructed in two floors. The ground floor includes a series of stairs ended into the upper floor. The second floor includes a limited space surrounded by adobe and muddy walls and the side where wind enters the structure does not have wall. Wooden curtains connected to a vertical axis are pushed around when the wind blows and leads to the rotation of the axis and in the end the mill stone. The structure of the windmills are constructed by adobe and mud, and belonged to Qajar period.

The Doushingan Sycamore Tree (Doushangan Village)

The Doushingan sycamore tree is located in Doushingan Village, which is one of the territories of Darmian District. This sycamore tree is an age old tree, which can be observed as a living phenomenon in the region. It has a height of almost 50 meters, shadow range of almost 500 meters, and is 1000 years old. From among other distinguishing features of this tree is the large girth of its trunk, in such a way that one could easily enter into the internal space of the trunk, which is almost 15 square meters, through installing an entrance door. This tree enjoys eternal life according to the belief of the local people, and this conviction is rooted in the respect of the Iranian people for nature. Hence, this tree should not be damaged.
